Los Altos Institution Fellowship

Application deadlines to come soon.

We’re selecting 50 high school students (rising 9th–12th graders) to join a no-cost, year-long policy fellowship focused on collaborative policy advisory work. Fellows will work in small, mentored teams to research, draft, and present policy briefs that inform real decision-makers. The program includes:

  • A curated crash course in policy analysis and advisory work, including how to structure memos, brief decision-makers, and translate evidence into actionable recommendations

  • Team-based policy projects within one of LAI’s policy centers or working groups, advising agencies, city councils, governors, and prime ministers on pressing policy challenges

  •  Access to guidance from professors and industry experts, who mentor fellows on research strategy, policy framing, and stakeholder engagement

  • A shared research and materials budget to support team briefings, data collection, and background analysis

  • Hands-on experience producing policy briefs, memos, and advisory decks, with support to refine, publish, and promote standout work in high-level outlets

  • Invitations to LAI-exclusive networking events with current and former industry and world leaders, emphasizing how policy advice is developed and delivered at the highest levels

  • The opportunity to present team policy briefings before audiences of pioneering academics, senior government officials, and founders of leading businesses

Our Centers

All of our fellows are part of one of our policy centers that range from topics like AI to Developing Democracies. Centers present policy proposals to world and business leaders, and are the institution's main mechanism for pushing policy innovation.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that wasn't answered below, please contact us at info@losaltosinsitution.org

Is there a cost to participate in the fellowship programs? No, all fellowships are free.

Does LAI prefer applicants with former research experience? All points of your application are looked at holistically, so don't worry if you haven't done much research. If you have, that's great! Prior research experience will not make or break your application; we're just looking for individuals who will put in the time and energy to learn and then apply their skills to their projects!

I noticed that LAI asks for standardized test scores, will I be penalized for choosing not to submit them? Not at all, SAT and ACT scores are totally optional.

I am a current senior in high school, am I eligible to apply? Unfortunately, you are not eligible to apply to the fellowship.

I live outside of the United States, am I eligible to apply? Yes! LAI is a global organization with a worldwide network of fellows.

What is the difference between a Fellow and a Senior Fellow? Senior Fellows hold leadership roles in the centers and also receive larger research budgets. To be under consideration for a Senior Fellow position, you must have either completed one year as a Los Altos Institution fellow or have incredible research experience.
